Regarding your question:
Holiday is a "Feiertag", vacation is "Urlaub". You say: she is on vacation, and this Thursday is a holiday.

But: is often mixed up, as you see in this stöckchen....

Do you know http://dict.leo.org/ ? Good help for translating.

And I questioned leo for this: it says, holiday also can be "Erholungsurlaub"... ah, now I see: -vacation- is AmE (American english), -holiday- more BE (british english)
